Oct. 12, 2012
The Bruins had an outstanding day at the Thomas Zimmer Championships Cross Country Course on Friday as the men took tenth and the women finished fifteenth at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational in Madison, WI. Fifth-ranked Iowa State claimed the team title in the women's championship race (109 pts.) and the men's title went to the Stanford Cardinal men (135 pts.)
Both teams improved their results from a year ago--particularly the women as they improved on their 43rd place finish in 2011. The women, who beat out eight ranked teams Friday, had an excellent 15th place finish with 472 points in the 6k championship race. Redshirt sophomore Kelsey Smith shined for the Bruins, crossing the finish line first for the women's squad and 45th overall (20:26). Katja Goldring rejoined the team with a solid 60th place finish (20:34).
Sophomore Lane Werley and junior Dustin Fay led the 27th ranked Bruin men for the second straight meet, finishing 30th and 34th overall, respectively. Werley ran the 8k championship race in 23:53 and Fay came in just three seconds later at 23:56. Nohe Lema also came back strong for the Bruins Friday in his 2012 season debut, finishing fifth for the Bruins and 144th overall with a time of 24:28.
