Morikawa Leads Men's XC To 4th-Place Finish at Pac-12 Championships
Oct. 29, 2011
The No. 20 men's cross country team finished fourth at the first ever Pac-12 Championships on Saturday behind senior Kent Morikawa's eighth-place run. The women's team finished 10th behind No. 1 runner Katja Goldring.
New conference member Colorado won both the men's and women's team titles. Stanford and Oregon finished second and third, respectively, on the men's side, while Washington and Stanford rounded out the top three on the women's side.
The men, who finished fourth last year, equaled that performance this year as the Bruins had two runners in the top 25. Morikawa posted the highest finish of his UCLA career as he was the No. 1 runner for the Bruins placing eighth with a time of 23:29.
"It was solid," said Morikawa. "We got a little slower than we anticipated, but we picked it up around 5K and you felt the change. People started moving in and it strung out real quick, but it felt nice."
Sophomore Nohe Lema, competing in his first conference championship, was the No. 2 runner, finishing 21st in a time of 23:51. Teammate Dustin Fay was in the No. 3 spot for UCLA, placing just outside of the top 25 at 26th in a time of 23:57. Freshman Chase Zukerman was 33rd (24:18) and junior Zack Torres finished 34th (24:21) to round out the top five runners for the men.
Goldring, who has been the No. 1 runner for the Bruins in three meets this season, continued in that position on Saturday as she led the women with a 42nd-place finish (21:20).
"I could have done better," said Goldring. "I ran hard. We were ready to do some good things, and I still think that's true for regionals."
Freshmen Annie Mooney (21:40) and Kelsey Smith (21:41) finished 61st and 62nd, respectively. Junior Sarah Toberty and freshman Bronte Golick ran identical times of 22:00 as Toberty placed 76th and Golick was 77th.
The Bruins will take the next two weeks off before traveling to Palo Alto to compete in the NCAA West Regional where tickets to NCAAs will be on the line on Nov. 12.
