2001 — Appeared in 25 games for UCLA, starting three … Was Bruins’ primary left-handed reliever, second on the team in appearances … Posted a 3-2 record with one save and an excellent 3.55 ERA … As a reliever, Kunes was 2-1 with a sparkling 2.62 ERA … Picked up save against Tulane (February 23), twirling three scoreless innings … Longest outing was 5 1/3 inning start in 14-inning marathon at Cal State Fullerton (April 18), where he gave up three runs on seven hits and received a no-decision … Struck out season-high three batters in victory over Cal State Northridge (March 13) and two weeks later allowed just one run in 3.1 innings to defeat the Matadors again … Picked up his third win of the season at Washington State (April 1, Game 1) by allowing just one run in 3.0 innings.

2000 (Summer) — Set a Northwoods League record for lowest ERA as a pitcher for the St. Cloud Riverbats … Allowed only 1.29 earned runs per game, and finished the season with a 6-1 record … Was selected a league all-star … Pitched 55.2 innings and allowed only eight earned runs … Struck out 32 batters … Team finished first in the league … Combined with UCLA teammate Paul Diaz to beat Waterloo 2-1 on July 18, allowing one earned run inthe ninth inning and striking out five … Diaz picked up the save.
