Box Score

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Cal Poly left-hander Garrett Olson held UCLA to one run over eight-plus innings as the No. 38 Mustangs rebounded to defeat the Bruins 2-1 in the nightcap of today's doubleheader at Jackie Robinson Stadium. UCLA (1-1) mustered a ninth-inning rally but fell short with the potential winning run on first base.

Cal Poly opened the scoring with a run in the first off of a Josh Lansford RBI double. The Bruins struck back with the tying run in the fourth when Chris Denove picked up his first RBI of the year with a single to center scoring Sean Smith. But Cal Poly registered the eventual winning run in the top of the seventh on a Brent Walker sacrifice fly.

Bryan Beck pitched six solid innings for the Bruins despite a no-decision. Junior right-hander Scott Botterman suffered the defeat, tossing 0.2 innings and allowing one run on two hits.

Cal Poly's Olson picked up the victory while limiting UCLA to just six hits while striking out eight.

The teams conclude the three-game series Sunday at Jackie Robinson Stadium at 1 p.m.
