Baseball Wins Finale Against Fresno State 6-5

Chris Denove has a career high-tying four RBI

Feb. 6, 2005

Box Score

FRESNO, Calif. - Junior catcher Chris Denove struck in the first and then again in the ninth as UCLA hung on to defeat Fresno State 6-5 Sunday afternoon at Pete Beiden Field. Denove laced a three-RBI double to left field in the Bruins' four-run first and then chimed in with a clutch RBI single in the ninth for the game-winning run.

Adam Simon pitched a scoreless 2.0 innings in relief for his first victory of the year.

The Bruins led 5-0 heading into the fifth but eleven walks helped Fresno State come all the way back and eventually tie the game on two bases loaded walks in the seventh inning.

But in the Bruin ninth, second baseman Sean Smith doubled to left with one out. After intentinally walking Hector Ambriz and getting third baseman Eric Taylor to ground into a fielder's choice, Denove stepped up with the potential winning run on third. The catcher slapped a Michael Cooper 2-1 pitch past a diving Bulldog third baseman for his fourth RBI of the afternoon.

Denove finished 2-for-5 at the plate and Smith finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
