Bruins Blowout UC Riverside 17-0

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Three first innings runs would be all UCLA needed, but the Bruins went on to score 14 more times and eventually pounded UC Riverside 17-0 at a chilly Jackie Robinson Stadium Tuesday evening. At the end of four innings UCLA led 15-0 while the Highlanders could only muster two hits all night against five different UCLA hurlers.
The 17-run margin of victory is the largest for UCLA since May 23, 2003 when the Bruins defeated Washington State 21-3 and is the largest shutout victory since UCLA's 20-0 win over Arizona on May 7, 1983.
Sophomore third baseman Eric Taylor led the charge for the Bruins, with a 2-for-2 night at the plate with two runs scored and four RBI. Taylor only played through the third inning, however, as did most of the Bruin starters. In all, 17 different UCLA hitters saw at-bats in the three-hour, twenty eight minute affair. Sean Smith, Hector Ambriz, Aaron Markel and Jarrad Page each drove in two runs apiece and four other Bruins drove in single runs.
Tommy Lansdon, in just his second start at shortstop, knocked a career high three doubles and scored two runs.
Right-hander Daniel Miltenberger (2-0) picked up the victory for UCLA after tossing a pre-determined four innings and allowing no runs on one hit.
Brian Schroeder, Scott Botterman, Kevin Brophy and Garrett White combined to throw a near perfect five innings in relief of Miltenberger in the Bruins' first shutout of the season.
Southpaw Pat Cassa (0-2) suffered the defeat for UC Riverside (3-4).
The two teams combined for nine errors with both teams committing season highs - four for UCLA and five for UCR. The five UCR errors led to six unearned runs, four of which came in the first two innings.
