Bruins Shut Down Bulldogs, 6-2

Senior right-hander Casey Janssen struck out eight batters and allowed only one hit in six innings to lead UCLA (2-0) to a 6-2 victory over Fresno State (2-3) on Friday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Janssen, who improved to 1-0 on the year, was nearly flawless in his second start of the season. His eight strikeouts, combined with nine from his UC Riverside start on February 3, brings his total to 17 strikeouts in 10 innings of work in 2004.
Behind the dominance of Janssen, the Bruins got on the board early as Chad Concolino started the contest with a single, the first hit of his UCLA career. After a Ryan McCarthy single, Concolino went to third on a fly out. The center fielder would score on a Wes Whisler double to put UCLA ahead 1-0 after one frame.
McCarthy would cross home plate in the third after reaching base on a leadoff walk. He would steal second and move to third on an error. McCarthy scored when Billy Susdorf reached base on another error.
Leading 2-0 heading into the fourth, the Bruins added another run to their total in the bottom of the inning. Preston Griffin would drive in Chris Denove with a sacrifice fly to give UCLA a 3-0 edge.
Three more Bruins would cross the plate in the seventh to put UCLA up 6-0. Singles from Susdorf and Denove, combined with walks to Brett McMillan and Concolino and Griffin being hit by a pitch gave UCLA an even larger advantage.
Freshman hurler Brant Rustich saw his first action, throwing two innings of relief. The El Cajon native allowed two runs and struck out two Bulldogs.
Right-hander Adam Simon finished the contest for the Bruins and pitched a scoreless half inning.
Griffin led the Bruins with two RBI, while Concolino, Susdorf, Whisler and Denove each had one.
Sophomore right-hander Hector Ambriz (1-0) will get the start tomorrow for UCLA. He will face fellow right-hander Matt Scott in the 1:00 pm match-up at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
