No. 12 Bruins Down Wright State, 4-2
March 2, 2013
Los Angeles, Calif. - The No. 12 UCLA Baseball team won their fourth game in a row on Saturday afternoon, earning a 4-2 victory over Wright State at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Junior right-hander Nick Vander Tuig turned in another strong performance on the mound, allowing two earned runs in 7.1 innings pitched to pick up the win.
Taylor Braun took the loss for the Raiders after allowing three earned runs in six innings. For the second consecutive game, sophomore David Berg earned the save after retiring all four batters he faced in 1.1 innings of work.
Wright State got on the board first in the top of the second after Jason DeFevers singled home Jeff Limbaugh with two outs to give the Raiders a 1-0 advantage. The Bruins answered in the bottom half of the inning though, getting two runs on a two-run single by senior Cody Regis to give the Bruins the 2-1 lead. UCLA would add another run in the bottom of third, as Pat Valaika doubled in Christoph Bono with two outs to increase the Bruins' lead to 3-1.
After a scoreless fourth inning, Vander Tuig got into some trouble in the fifth, loading the bases with one out and bringing Wright State's top hitter, Mark Fowler, to the plate. But Vander Tuig escaped any trouble by inducing a 6-4-3 double play from Fowler to end the threat.
Vander Tuig retired the next six batters and got another insurance run in the bottom of the seventh after Kevin Kramer singled home Brian Carroll to put UCLA's lead up to three. After getting the first batter of the eighth inning to ground out, Vander surrendered a double and was replaced by Ryan Deeter. Deeter gave up an RBI single to Fowler to cut the lead to 4-2, but Berg came in and retired the next batter to end the inning. Berg pitched a clean ninth inning as well to seal the 4-2 win.
Overall, Regis led the Bruins at the plate, hitting two singles in three at-bats and knocking in two runs. Kramer and Valaika each went 1-3 with a RBI, extending their streak of reaching base safely to nine games apiece.
UCLA and Wright State will conclude their three-game series tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. out at Jackie Robinson Staduim. Grant Watson (1-0, 2.13 ERA) will take the mound for the Bruins while Robby Sexton (1-1, 2.89 ERA) will start for the Raiders.
Game Notes: This was the longest outing for Nick Vander Tuig since he threw eight innings against New Mexico in the NCAA Los Angeles Regional on June 2, 2012...Brian Carroll has now stolen at least two bases in each of UCLA's three-game series, stealing a total of four so far in the Wright State series...In his last three games, David Berg has allowed just one base runner (a walk) and has struck out seven of the last 11 batters he's faced...with the win, the Bruins have now clinched a series victory in all three of the weekend series they've played thus far.
