March 7, 1998

LOS ANGELES- Sophomore Willie Bloomquist had a perfect day, going 4-4 with two walks to help lead the eight-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils to a 14-6 victory over UCLA at Jackie Robinson Stadium on Saturday.

The Sun Devils took a 4-0 lead after three and a half innings, scoring one in the first inning on an RBI-single by freshman Jeff Phelps and then three more in the fourth inning.

UCLA tried to get back in the game. Junior Jason Green's single in the fourth inning brought home the second run of the inning for the Bruins, making it 4-2 Arizona State. Those would be the only runs junior Phill Lowery (4-2) would allow. He pitched six strong innings and allowed just four hits while striking out nine.

The Sun Devils broke open the game up with three runs in the sixth inning. Junior Andrew Beinbrink hit a two-run home run to knock freshman Chad Cislak (2-4) out of the game. Arizona State added five more runs in the seventh inning, highlighted by Beinbrink's three-run double, giving him five RBIs in the game.

UCLA scored four runs in the ninth inning, using hits from four different pinch hitters. Sophomore Michael Hymes singled. Sophomore Aldo Pinto hit his first home run of the season, a two-run blast. Freshman Bill Scott collected his first collegiate hit by doubling. Then freshman Forrest Johnson singled in Scott and came around to score on the play due to an error by sophomore center fielder Dustin Delucchi.

Freshman Chase Utley led the Bruins with two hits. Freshman Garrett Atkins extended his hitting streak to eight with a fourth-inning single.

The final game of the three-game series will be on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Senior righthander Richie Leon (1-0, 1.08) is scheduled to start for Arizona State. Freshman righthander Jon Brandt ( 1-2, 8.59) is scheduled to start for UCLA.
