Janssen Leads UCLA to 4-2 Win Over 20th-Ranked Nebraska

SAN DIEGO, CA - Senior Casey Janssen improved to 5-0 on the season with a solid performance against 20th-ranked Nebraska (7-4) in the Bruins' 4-2 win at PETCO Park in San Diego. UCLA improved to 12-7 on the season.

Janssen allowed only four hits over a career-high 8.2 innings of work. He gave up two runs while striking out five and walking one.

UCLA put up two runs in the bottom of the second inning to take an early lead. Matt Thayer started the rally by reaching base on an error from the third baseman. Ryan McCarthy followed him with a single. After a flyout, Chris Denove drove in Thayer with a single up the middle. Mike Svetlic would walk to load the bases and a sacrifice fly from Sean Carpenter brought in McCarthy.

McCarthy would score again in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run home run. The junior from Thousand Oaks hit his third of the season over the left field fence. He drove in Thayer, who had singled up the middle earlier in the inning. After six, UCLA led 4-0.

Nebraska posted two runs in the top of the ninth, but the rally would fall short as freshman Brian Schroeder picked up his first save as a Bruin.

UCLA will finish up its trip to San Diego tomorrow in an 11:00 a.m. match-up with Houston. Sophomore right-hander Hector Ambriz will get the start for the Bruins.
