Los Angeles - Freshman right-hander Garett Claypool scattered three hits in 5.1 scoreless innings as the UCLA baseball team fell to No. 17 Long Beach State, 4-2, Tuesday evening at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Sophomore shortstop Brandon Crawford led the Bruins at the plate, hitting 2-for-4 with one run scored.

Long Beach State tagged UCLA's bullpen for four runs in the eighth inning to win the two game home-and-home season series for the first time since 2001.

Senior right-hander Kevin Brophy (0-1) was tagged with the loss for the Bruins (8-10), allowing one run off one hit and striking out two in 1.2 innings of relief. Long Beach State right-hander David Roberts (1-0) earned the victory, recording one strikeout and allowing one hit in 1.2 innings.

The Dirtbags (11-5) led off the eighth inning with a double to right by third baseman Jason Tweedy, who moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by second baseman Matt Cline. Center fielder Robert Perry drew a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. First baseman Brandon Godfrey singled to shortstop to score Tweedy from third. Perry scored from third on a wild pitch, giving the Dirtbags a 2-0 lead. Long Beach State expanded its lead to four with a two-run home run by right fielder Jason Corder.

UCLA cut Long Beach State's lead in half, 4-2, in the ninth inning. Second baseman Alden Carrithers led off the inning with a walk. Crawford doubled to right, and Carrithers scored when Corder bobbled the ball. Crawford took third on a groundout and scored when left fielder Brady Dolan grounded out to shortstop.

Long Beach State right-hander Andre Lamontagne struck out three batters and allowed one hit in 3.1 innings of relief. Dirtbag right-hander Dustin Rasco earned his first save of the season, allowing one run off one hit in the ninth inning.

The Bruins hit the road to face San Diego State in a three-game series beginning Friday, March 16. First pitch Friday is slated for 6 p.m. The Bruins and Aztecs play at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Game Notes: Claypool lowered his ERA from 4.05 to 2.25 with 5.1 scoreless innings; he retired nine consecutive batters from the end of the first inning until shortstop Danny Espinosa singled to right with two outs in the top of the fourth...Long Beach State left-hander Shane Peterson allowed three hits and struck out one batter in 3.0 innings as the Dirtbags' starting pitcher...right fielder Mickey Weisser recorded all three outs in the top of the fifth inning, catching all three fly balls that came his way.
