April 1, 2011
LOS ANGELES - Right-hander Gerrit Cole struck out 10 batters in a complete-game effort to earn his third victory of the year, leading the No. 24 UCLA baseball team past Washington, 2-1, in the opener of a Pac-10 series at Jackie Robinson Stadium on Friday night.
Cole (3-2) allowed one run and five hits through nine innings, tossing his second complete game of the season and the third of his career. He issued just two walks and moved into fourth place on UCLA's all-time strikeouts list with 314.
Catcher Steve Rodriguez helped anchor a stellar defensive effort for the Bruins (12-9, 3-1 Pac-10) by throwing out all three of Washington's attempted base stealers. Rodriguez threw out pinch-runner Brendan Gardner-Young, the Huskies' potential tying run, at second base on a stolen base attempt to end the ballgame.
Cody Keefer went 3-for-4 and Cody Regis had a run-scoring single to lead UCLA's offense. Beau Amaral went 1-for-2 with one run and two walks, as the Bruins extended their win streak to nine games in the series against Washington.
Washington right-hander Aaron West (0-5) absorbed the loss, allowing two runs and seven hits in 6.1 innings. Caleb Brown led the Huskies (7-16, 0-1 Pac-10) at the plate with a 2-for-3 effort.
The Bruins claimed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning with a sharp RBI-single to right field by Cody Regis, who scored Amaral from second base.
With the bases loaded in the seventh, Washington's Jeff Brigham fired a two-strike, two-out wild pitch that bounced off the foot of catcher B.K. Santy and toward the Huskies' dugout, allowing Steve Rodriguez to score from third.
