LOS ANGELES--
Junior Eric Valent's two-out bases loaded game-winning single in the bottom of the 10th inning capped off a dramatic comeback by UCLA. The Bruins trailed the Golden Bears, 12-2 after five and a half innings of play. UCLA rallied with four runs in the eighth inning, six runs in the ninth inning to tie the game. Then after California took a 15-14 lead in the top of the 10th inning, UCLA rallied once again, scoring two runs in the bottom of the 10th inning to win the game. California was one out away from winning the game in both the ninth and 10th innings.
California walked in four runs in the ninth inning. Valent led off the ninth inning with a home run. Freshman garrett Atkins walked. After freshman Chase Utley hit into a force play, senior Casey Cloud doubled. Then sophomore Jon Cuccias allowed three consecutive walks to senior Cassidy Olson, sophomore Michael Hymes and junior Jack Santora. Cuccias was lifted for freshman Rob Meyer, who proceeded to walk senior Eric Byrnes, forcing home a run. The walks to Hymes and Santora had also forced in runs. Then sophomore Aldo Pinto hit a blooper into left field that fell for an RBI-single. With the bases loaded and one out, Valent popped out to short. Atkins walked, forcing in the tying run. Meyer proceeded to strike out Utley to end the inning.
In the top of the 10th inning, senior Aaron Gordnier blasted a home run over the center field wall with one out in the 10th inning to give California 15-14 lead. The Bruins once again staged a rally. In the bottom of the 10th inning, after Meyer retired Cloud on a groundout to second, he walked Olson. Sophomore Ryan Roques pinch-ran for Olson and stole second. Hymes struck out. Then Santora ripped a double off the center field wall to tie the game at 15. Byrnes was intentionally walked. Pinto walked. Then Valent ripped a single into right-center field to win the game.
The Bruins' comeback spoiled a great pitching performance from California starter Jon Shirley, a sophomore righthander. Shirley struck out a career-high nine batters and allowed four runs on five hits in seven innings. In the final 2.2 innings of the game, the Golden Bears' bullpen allowed nine hits and 10 walks which led to 12 runs.
Valent, Atkins, Cloud and Santora each had two hits for UCLA. Santora drew three walks and Atkins and valent each drew two walks. Cloud played a huge role in the Bruins' win, coming off the bench and doubling in the eighth and ninth innings.
Gordnier and sophomore Juan Hernandez each had three hits to lead California. Gordnier collected four RBIs.
