LOS ANGELES -- Freshman Garret Atkins extended his hitting streak to 26 games to break the UCLA record, in helping his team to a 15-7 victory over rival Arizona Friday at Jackie Robinson Stadium in Los Angeles.
Atkins, who was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, singled in the first inning to break the record set by David Tokheim in 1991. Atkins got help from second baseman Nick Theodorou (4-for-5, 5 RBI) and rightfielder Eric Byrnes (2-for-4, 4 runs) to lead the Bruins' offensive explosion against their Six-PAC South rival. UCLA had 20 hits off the Wildcats' pitchers.
Keoni DeRenne went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI for Arizona, who took a 6-4 lead with 5 runs in the third. But starter Tyler Haddix lasts only one inning and Dave Abbott came on in relief only to give up five runs in three innings.
UCLA head coach Gary Adams was ejected in the 6th inning. His team is now 16-23 overall. Arizona falls to 27-17.
