April 13, 1998

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -UCLA rallied with nine runs in the sixth inning, sending 14 men to the plate, to overcome a five-run deficit and defeat the Arizona Wildcats, 12-7, on Sunday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium. With the victory, UCLA moves one half game ahead of the Wildcats for fourth place in the Pac-10, Southern Division. Senior Eric Byrnes scored the go-ahead run as freshman Bill Scott hit into a force play. The run scored by Byrnes was the 212th of his career, breaking the school record of 211 previously held by Torey Lovullo. The nine runs UCLA scored in the sixth inning was the most it has scored in an inning this season.

Arizona scored three runs in the first inning. Freshman Keoni DeRenne collected an RBI-double. Senior Kenny Corley knocked home a run with a single. Junior Greg Clark added an RBI-single. In the second inning, junior Omar Moraga singled home a run to give Arizona a 4-0 lead.

In the second inning, after UCLA had loaded the bases with no outs, sophomore Tony Milo (7-3) struck out the side (senior Brett Nista, junior Jack Santora and Byrnes). Milo had retired seven in a row until sophomore Aldo Pinto hit his second home run of the season, spoiling Milo's bid at a shutout and no-hitter.

Junior Rob Shabansky belted a two-run home run with two outs in the fifth inning to give Arizona a 6-1 lead, knocking freshman Chad Cislak out of the game.

UCLA then erupted for nine runs in the sixth inning. Byrnes and senior Cassidy Olson each had two-run singles in the inning. Olson also drew a bases loaded walk, giving him three RBIs in the inning. Sophomore Ryan Moskau, who had allowed just four of 21 inherited runners to score this season, allowed three inherited runners to score. He entered the game with the bases loaded and one out and allowed Scott's fielder's choice. Moskau then walked junior Jason Green and Pinto before allowing the two-run single to Olson.

Junior Eric Valent and Scott hit back-to-back home runs in the eighth inning for UCLA.

Freshman Bobby Roe (4-2) did not allow an earned run in 4.1 innings to earn the win.
