TEMPE, Ariz. -- The 16th-ranked Arizona State baseball
team (29-14, 15-6 Six-Pac) extended its winning streak to nine
games with a 19-10 win over the UCLA Bruins (18-25, 10-15
Six-Pac) this evening in front of a crowd of 2,619 at Packard
Stadium.
Arizona State has now won ten straight conference games.
The Devils were led offensively by junior Andrew Beinbrink
who ended the night 3-for-4 with four RBI and three runs
scored. Also contributing to the barrage of hits by the Sun
Devils was Dan Meier, who hit his fourth home run of the
season, in a 4-for-6 effort knocking in two while scoring four.
Sophomore Willie Bloomquist, senior Richy Leon and senior
Rudy Arguelles each had three RBI in tonight's game. Junior
Ryan Mills (6-3) picked up the win tonight, going five and
two-third innings giving up 11 hits and eight earned runs. Mills
also struck out six. Freshman Chad Pennington notched his
second save of the season, pitching three-plus innings of no
run ball.
UCLA was led by Brett Nista who went 3-for-4 with four RBI
and one run scored, on his eighth home run of the season. Eric
Valent also knocked one over the fence, his 22nd of the
season, in a 2-for-5 evening. Also helping the Bruins was Nick
Theodorou who went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Starting pitcher
Paul Diaz (1-3) picked up the loss for UCLA, going four
innings giving up 11 hits and eight earned runs.
The Sun Devils face UCLA tomorrow afternoon at Packard
Stadium at noon in the second game of the three-game
conference series. Righthanded pitcher Richy Leon (2-0, 5.87
ERA) is expected to take the mound for ASU while freshman
lefty Ryan Carter (2-1, 6.35 ERA) is the Bruins probable
starter.
