Claypool Pitches No. 5 UCLA Baseball Past UC Irvine, 4-1
April 27, 2010
LOS ANGELES - Right-hander Garett Claypool allowed one run and six hits through a career-high 7.2 innings, leading the No. 5 UCLA baseball team past UC Irvine, 4-1, in a non-conference game Tuesday evening at Steele Field at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Tuesday night's victory allowed UCLA (30-7) to reach the 30-win plateau faster than any previous Bruins' baseball team and snapped UC Irvine's four-game win streak.
Claypool (6-1) earned his sixth victory of the spring, recording three strikeouts and one walk. Right-hander Dan Klein collected his team-leading eighth save, striking out one batter in the top of the ninth inning.
UC Irvine right-hander Evan Brock (3-3) was tagged with the loss, allowing one run in 1.1 innings as the starting pitcher for the Anteaters (24-14).
The Bruins were led at the plate by right fielder Chris Giovinazzo, who went 1-for-2 with his first home run of the season, two RBI and two walks. Designated hitter Blair Dunlap notched UCLA's only multiple-hit performance, going 2-for-5. Left fielder Cody Keefer went 1-for-3 with one double and two walks, while third baseman Cody Regis went 1-for-2 with two walks, two runs and one RBI.
UC Irvine received 2-for-4 efforts from second baseman Casey Stevenson and third baseman Brian Hernandez.
UCLA claimed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on a sacrifice fly by center fielder Beau Amaral.
The Bruins pushed their cushion to 4-0 in the fifth inning. After leading off the frame with a double down the right-field line, Keefer advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a base-hit to right field by Regis. Giovinazzo's two-run homer on the first pitch of his at-bat handed UCLA a 4-0 lead.
UC Irvine got on the board with one run in the top of the eighth. With two outs, Hernandez belted a run-scoring double to the center field fence, allowing Stevenson to score from first.
UCLA returns to Jackie Robinson Stadium for a three-game Pac-10 series against No. 3 Arizona State beginning Friday, April 30. Game time of the series opener is 6 p.m. Admission costs $7 for adults and $5 for children (ages 16 and under), and parking costs $5 at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
