LONG BEACH, Calif.- Senior Cassidy Olson came off the bench and blasted a two-run home run over the center field wall in the 10th inning on Tuesday evening at Blair Field to give UCLA a 4-2 victory over Long Beach State. Freshman Chad Cislak pitched five no-hit innings to earn his fourth victory of the season.
Olson had been given the night off, but pinch-hit for freshman Eric Reece in the eighth inning when the 49ers brought in their top lefthanded pitcher, Daryl Grant. In the 10th inning, freshman Chase Utley doubled in front of a hometown crowd. Then one out later, Olson hit his 10th home run of the season.
Cislak allowed a leadoff walk in the bottom of the 10th inning, his first and only walk, but then he retired Termel Sledge on a fly out to center before striking out both Chuck Lopez and Jason Berni. UCLA scored in the first inning. Senior Eric Byrnes reached base safely on an error, stole second, took third on senior Nick Theodorou's sacrifice bunt and then scored on junior Eric Valent's RBI-groundout.
After the 49ers scored a run in the second and a run in the fifth. The Bruins tied the game in the h inning on a deep shot over the left field wall by Byrnes, his 10th home run of the season.
The score remained tied at two until the 10th inning.
