LOS ANGELES-- Junior Eric Valent blasted a home run over the batter's eye in center field in the fourth inning and took a home run away from junior Russ Riehl in the sixth inning, as UCLA defeated Portland State, 7-6, on Friday evening at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
The Bruins survived a scare in the ninth inning. The Vikings pushed across four runs and had the tying run at second base and go-ahead run at first base with two outs. Freshman lefthander Bobby Roe proceeded to strike out junior Erik Remmington to earn his sixth save of the season. With the save, Roe set a new school record for most saves by a freshman.
Freshman lefthander Ryan Carter pitched a gem for UCLA. He had allowed just two runs through eight innings but showed signs of fatigue in the ninth. He left the game with the bases loaded and one out, and all three of those runs came around to score. Carter improved to 3-1 with the victory.
