UCLA won its third in a row, defeating the University of San Diego Toreros 7-1 at Jackie Robinson Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
Ryan Carter, Matt Klein, Bobby Roe and Tyler Dersom did not allow an earned run. Carter, Roe and Dersom are all freshmen. Carter, a 14th round draft choice of the Pittsburgh Pirates in June, allowed two hits and one unearned runs in his four innings of work. The lefthander made his first collegiate start and earned his first collegiate victory.
UCLA got on the scoreboard and took the lead for good in the second inning when Michael Hymes singled home Nick Theodorou.
Eric Valent and Garrett Atkins each blasted their first home run of the season and helped lead UCLA to the victory. Brett Nista extended his hitting streak to nine with a pair of singles.
Chris Humpert led the Toreros with two hits. Mike Amundson suffered the defeat, allowing one run in two innings. Kevin Reese pitched two perfect innings for the Toreros in relief.
UCLA will play in Berkeley this weekend against the California Golden Bears. It is the start of league play for both teams.
