Senior right fielder Eric Byrnes has been drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the eighth round of the major league draft. Byrnes batted .332 with 14 home runs and 52 RBI in 1998.

Byrnes is UCLA's all-time career hits leader (326). He also holds UCLA's career record in doubles (75), runs scored (235), games played (242) and at bats (984).

Byrnes is a three-time winner of the UCLA Baseball Academic Award given to the player with the highest GPA in each class.

This 1997 fourth round draft choice of the Houston Astros elected to come back to school for his senior season and set a career-high in stolen bases in 1998 with 30, becoming the fourth player in school history to steal 30 bases or more in a season.
