UCLA's David Huff Named Sixth-Best Prospect by Baseball America

Huff has logged 29 strikeouts and two walks in 26.0 innings at triple-A (Buffalo)

LOS ANGELES - Former UCLA left-handed pitcher David Huff has been named the sixth-best prospect by Baseball America in the national publication's top prospect list released on June 27. Huff, promoted from double-A Akron to triple-A Buffalo at the end of May, has compiled a 2-1 record and 3.46 ERA for the Bisons.

In five starts for Buffalo, Huff has totaled 29 strikeouts while issuing just two walks in 26.0 innings (no walks in two starts this week). Opponents are hitting the former UCLA left-hander at a .228 clip. Huff began the 2008 season pitching for the Akron Aeros (double-A), posting a 5-1 record and 1.92 ERA. Huff totaled 62 strikeouts and 14 walks in 65.2 innings with Akron, limiting opponents to a mere .189 batting average.

In his first career triple-A appearance, a start against Rochester on June 6, Huff allowed one run and scattered three hits in six innings, totaling five strikeouts and one walk. Huff recorded nine strikeouts in seven scoreless innings at Louisville on June 21, limiting the opposition to five hits without issuing any walks.

Huff, a supplemental first-round draft selection by the Cleveland Indians in June 2006, pitched for the Surprise Rafters in the Arizona Fall League in the fall of 2007. Huff, who hails from Huntington Beach, Calif., was selected to compete in the Arizona Fall League's "Rising Stars Showcase" on Oct. 26, 2007.

In 2007, Huff posted a 2.72 ERA and 4-2 in 11 starts for the Kinston Indians (single-A). Huff totaled 46 strikeouts and 15 walks in 59.2 innings, limiting opponents to a .251 average before being sidelined with an injury in late May.

As a junior at UCLA in 2006, Huff became the first Bruin selected in the first round of the Major League Baseball Draft since 2000, when Josh Karp was chosen in the first round by the Montreal Expos. At UCLA, Huff hurled three complete games, posting a 2.98 ERA and 7-4 record in 16 starts (129.2 innings) while leading the Bruins to the NCAA Malibu Regional.

Huff transferred to UCLA after pitching for Cypress College in 2005 and UC Irvine in 2004.
