Garret Atkins collected two hits in three at bats and drew two walks on Saturday evening at the Cape Cod League All-Star Game, showing why he is regarded as one of the top pro prospects in college baseball.
The two-time All-American and two-time Cape Cod League All-Star was selected as the MVP of the west squad. He broke a 4-4 tie by knocking home two runs (including UCLA teammate Chase Utley who also had a sacrifice fly in the game) with a double down the right field line. Atkins and Utley both represented the Cotuit Kettleers at the All-Star Game played Spillane Field in Wareham, MA. Atkins started at first base and Utley at second base. On Thursday, all the Cape Cod League All-Stars were honored at Fenway Park. Atkins, Utley and UCLA teammate Chad Cislak (Brewster) took part in a workout held by the Boston Red Sox that was held on the same day.
In just under two seasons in the Cape Cod League, Atkins has compiled an eye-ctaching .264 batting average. That is not surprising since he is UCLA's all-time career batting average leader (.379). UCLA's all-time career hits leader Eric Byrnes (1995-1998), who was just promoted to Midland (AA, Oakland Athletics) after tearing up the California League (league leader in hits and runs scored) averaged 81.5 hits per season for the Bruins while Atkins has averaged 90.5 hits per season.
Atkins will attempt to become the first three-time All-American in school history in 2000.
