UCLA's Gerrit Cole Tabbed Team USA's Top Prospect

DURHAM, N.C. - Rising junior right-hander Gerrit Cole has been named the top prospect from the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team this summer, as rated in Baseball America's top-20 prospect selections. The hard-throwing right-hander helped lead Team USA to the silver medal at the World University Baseball Championships. Cole has been named the top prospect from Team USA for the second consecutive summer by Baseball America. Hailing from Santa Ana, Calif., Cole went 2-0 with a 0.72 ERA in a team-high 25.0 innings this summer. He registered 23 strikeouts and four walks in five games, making four starts. Cole pitched seven shutout innings against Cuba in the FISU championship game, a contest that Team USA lost, 4-3, in 10 innings under the international tiebreak rule. As a sophomore for the Bruins in 2010, Cole earned All-Pac-10 Team honors for the second consecutive season. He went 11-4 with a 3.37 ERA in 123.0 innings, notching 153 strikeouts and 52 walks. Cole helped UCLA advance to the College World Series for the first time since 1997. The Bruins reached the championship series in Omaha, Neb., for the first time in school history, falling short in a best-of-three series to South Carolina.
