Los Angeles - Mitchell Beacom, a 6-foot-8, 215-pound left-handed pitcher, has signed a National Letter-of-Intent to play baseball at UCLA, head coach John Savage announced this week. A talented student-athlete from University City High School in San Diego, Calif., Beacom will enroll at UCLA along with nine other players in the fall of 2007.

Beacom has twice earned San Diego Union-Tribune All-Academic honors. The San Diego southpaw missed a portion of his sophomore season and all of his junior year with a foot injury. Beacom recorded a 1.00 ERA and a 1-2 record as a sophomore and posted a .351 batting average as a freshman. At the Area Code camp in December 2005, he earned most valuable player accolades as a pitcher. Beacom also competed on the Orange County Braves scout team.

Aside from his achievements on the field, Beacom is a three-year varsity water polo letterwinner as the team's goalkeeper. An all-league first-team selection, Beacom established the school record for career blocks and earned defensive most valuable player honors three times. Beacom's mother and father, Luann and John, both attended UCLA, and Luann competed for the UCLA swimming team.

Beacom joins nine other student-athletes who have signed National Letters-of-Intent to play baseball at UCLA in 2007-08. The recruiting class includes three AFLAC All-Americans - right-handed pitcher Erik Goeddel (Hillsborough, Calif.) and outfielders Jason Heyward (McDonough, Ga.) and Brett Krill (Laguna Nigel, Calif.).
