LOS ANGELES (AP) - Kris Johnson scored 20 points - his third straight game
over 20 - and No. 9 UCLA defeated Southern California 101-84 Wednesday night,
its seventh straight victory over the crosstown rival Trojans.
The Bruins (14-3, 5-2 Pac-10) trailed by five points at the beginning of the
game, then went on a 37-9 run to take a 23-point lead.
The Trojans (6-11, 2-5) lost their seventh straight on the road and kept
second-year coach Henry Bibby, who played on three NCAA championship teams at
UCLA, winless in four meetings against his alma mater.
Seniors Johnson, Toby Bailey and J.R. Henderson have yet to lose to Southern
California in their careers.
Johnson turned in his third straight solid showing, coming off the 43-point,
22-rebound performances he had in two road games last weekend when the Bruins
defeated California by one and lost to Stanford by 13.
With the Trojans ahead by two, a layin by Johnson began a run of 13 straight
points that was part of the 37-9 spree. Bailey had 10 points in the spurt to
put UCLA ahead 39-16.
The Bruins shot 72 percent in the first half and were 9-of-16 from 3-point
range for the game, well above their 36 percent average in Pac-10 play.
The Trojans shot just 37 percent over the first 20 minutes and were
outrebounded 41-32 for the game.
After Johnson and Earl Watson hit consecutive 3-pointers, Baron Davis drove
the lane and flipped the ball in with his right hand to give UCLA a 25-point
lead - its largest in the first half.
Bailey and Jelani McCoy added 16 points each for UCLA, and Watson had 15.
Jeff Trepagnier scored 18 points for USC, which never cut its deficit to
single figures in the second half. The Trojans got as close as 18 points before
UCLA pulled its starters for the final five minutes.
