Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Named Greatest College Basketball Player Ever by ESPN

Bill Walton ranked No. 3 in Top 25

March 13, 2008

Two of the greatest players in UCLA history are two of the greatest in college basketball history, according to ESPN.

ESPN has been counting down the 25 greatest players in college basketball history throughout the season.

Recently, ESPN announced that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (Lew Alcindor in his college days) had been selected the No. 1 player in the history of the game. Fellow Bruin Bill Walton was the No. 3 player on the list.

Abdul-Jabbar played three years for the UCLA varsity (he was on the freshman team in 1965-66 and on the varsity from 1966-67 through 1968-69). During that time, UCLA won three NCAA championships, becoming the first school to win three in a row. The Bruins compiled a record of 88-2 and Abdul-Jabbar was three times named NCAA Final Four Outstanding Player and Player of the Year.

In his three years, he averaged 26.4 points and 15.5 rebounds while shooting .639 on his field goal attempts.

Walton played three years for UCLA (1971-72 through 1973-74) after playing on the freshman team in 1970-71. During his three years, UCLA won two NCAA titles and won 75 straight games en route to a record of 86-4. Walton was twice selected Player of the Year and was a three-time All-American.

In his three years, he averaged 20.3 points and 15.7 rebounds while shooting .651 on his field goal attempts.
