IN THE POLLS
UCLA is unranked in the AP Top 25 and the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll (Dec. 20). The Bruins are no longer receiving votes in either poll. The UC Irvine Anteaters are 6-5 on the season and also unranked in both polls.
SERIES VS. UC IRVINE
This is just the eighth meeting between the UC Irvine Anteaters and UCLA with the Bruins leading the series 5-2. UCLA has won the last four meetings since 1990, including the last meeting, a 76-65 win on Nov. 27, 2004 in Pauley Pavilion. UCLA is 4-1 against UC Irvine in Pauley with the only loss coming in the very first meeting between the two teams, an 80-74 setback in the first round of the 1986 NIT. UCLA Head Coach Ben Howland is 2-1 all-time against UC Irvine.
BRUINS' INJURY REPORT
Sophomore forward Tyler Honeycutt has a sprained AC joint in his right shoulder. He sustained the injury in the second half of the Bruins' win over Montana State on Dec. 21, 2010. He will not play in the Bruins' game against UC Irvine (Dec. 23) and is day-to-day.
UCLA AND THE BIG WEST
Thursday night's contest with UC Irvine marks the fifth time this season UCLA has hosted a team from the Big West Conference. The Bruins are currently 4-0 against Big West foes, posting wins over Cal State Northridge (83-50), Pacific (57-44), Cal Poly (72-61) and UC Davis (74-67). Last year, the Bruins dropped both games they played against Big West teams, a 65-68 double overtime loss in the season opener to Cal State Fullerton at home and a 68-79 defeat to Long Beach State in Anaheim, Calif.
NELSON NAMED PAC-10 PLAYER OF THE WEEK
UCLA's Reeves Nelson was named Pac-10 Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Dec. 13-19, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today. The sophomore forward led the Bruins to a pair of victories over UC Davis and previously unbeaten No. 16 BYU last week. The Modesto, Calif., native scored a career-high 23 points in the 86-79 win over BYU on Saturday, helping the Bruins snap a five-game losing streak to ranked teams. Nelson finished 8-for-17 from the field and 7-for-13 from the free-throw line while adding four rebounds and two assists. In the 74-67 win over UC Davis earlier in the week, Nelson had 13 points, nine rebounds, one block and one assist. For the week, he averaged 18.0 points and 6.5 rebounds, while shooting 54.5 percent (12-for-22) from the field. It is Nelson's second career Pac-10 Player of the Week honor, second of the season and the 53rd weekly recognition for UCLA all-time.
