UCLA Football Coach Jim Mora Announces Hires, Shifts in Coaching Staff
Jan. 9, 2012
UCLA Head Football Coach Jim Mora today announced the hiring of two additional assistant coaches: Eric Yarber as Wide Receivers Coach and Sal Alosi as Coordinator of Strength and Conditioning - Football, a new position at UCLA.
Mora also announced a shift in the responsibilities of Angus McClure from Special Teams Coach/Recruiting Coordinator to Defensive Line Coach/Recruiting Coordinator, and that former defensive line coach Inoke Breckterfield will have the opportunity to remain on the staff in a football operations role.
"These coaches are all important elements to us moving our program forward," Mora said. "We welcome them, as coaches and teachers on and off the field, to the UCLA football family."
Yarber most recently served as the wide receivers coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers under Raheem Morris. He attended Crenshaw High School in Los Angeles and then Los Angeles Valley College before transferring to Idaho.
Yarber began his coaching career at Idaho in 1996 and moved to UNLV a year later. In 1998, Dennis Erickson named him an assistant coach for the Seattle Seahawks. Yarber coached under Erickson in some capacity from 1998-2004 and again from 2007-2009, including a stint as wide receivers coach with the San Francisco 49ers, on the same coaching staff as Mora. In addition, Yarber was at the University of Washington as wide receivers coach from 2005-2006.
Alosi, a former New York Jets and Hofstra University strength and conditioning coach, played linebacker collegiately at Hofstra from 1996-2000 and joined its coaching staff upon graduation in 2001. He was the Jets' strength and conditioning coach from 2002-2005 and 2007-2010. In his second stint in New York, he was on the same staff as UCLA Offensive Coordinator Noel Mazzone. In 2006, Alosi's only year away from "Gang Green", he was a member of Mora's coaching staff with the Atlanta Falcons.
The 2012 campaign will be the sixth season in Westwood for McClure, who came to UCLA after serving as the offensive line/run game coordinator on Turner Gill's staff at the University of Buffalo during the 2006 season. McClure spent the two previous seasons (2004-2005) as an assistant on Bill Callahan's staff at Nebraska. McClure assisted with the offensive line, coaching the offensive tackles, as well as serving in several special teams roles.
Prior to his stint at Nebraska, McClure played a major role in the program at Sacramento State University, where he served as assistant head coach and offensive line coach from 1997-2003, and coached tight ends at Nevada in 1996.
Breckterfield coached the Bruin defensive line in 2011. An All-Pac-10 performer during his playing days at Oregon State, he previously coached the defensive line at Montana (2010) and Weber State (2009). He also spent three seasons at his alma mater as a graduate assistant coach for the Beavers in 2008 and 2007 and a volunteer coach in 2006.
The only remaining vacancy on the staff is at defensive coordinator, and Mora expects to name someone to that position by the end of the week.
