Football Camp: Practice 19 Report
Aug. 19, 2012
The Bruins dialed it up a notch in the evening practice on Sunday, conducting their most extensive live hitting of the camp. In the morning session, UCLA worked out in shorts on the new artificial turf and grass fields on campus.
Coach Mora sensed it was the right time to up the tempo and up the energy with live hitting, in a scrimmage situation, on Sunday evening. Quarterback Brett Hundley threw for four touchdowns in the action, including a long pass to Shaquelle Evans. Other scoring passes went to Johnathan Franklin, Daminen Thigpen and Devin Lucien. Richard Brehaut also came on to toss a scoring aerial, hitting Logan Sweet for six. The defense had its moments as Jordan Zumwalt, Ishmael Adams and Kenny Orjioke each came up with interceptions. Ka'imi Fairbairn booted several long field goals, including one of 50-plus yards. Special teams were also a part of the live action and Steven Manfro had a long kickoff return during one drill. Coach Mora noted that the offensive line seemed to step it up during the live session. He added that Hundley seemed calm and made good decisions at the quarterback spot.
The team worked on game situations in several drills in the morning. There was a blitz period and special teams work.Coach Mora also talked after practice about developing versatility with the defensive secondary. Most of the players have received work at multiple positions in the secondary during camp.
