Franklin: Semifinalist for Collegiate Player of the Year Award

UCLA senior running back Johnathan Franklin was selected today as one of 16 semifinalists for the Maxwell Award, which annually recognizes the Collegiate Player of the Year.
Franklin (3,711 career rushing yards), the Pac-12's leading rusher, is just 21 yards shy of moving past Gaston Green (1984-87, 3,731 yards) as UCLA's all-time leading rusher. He ranks seventh in the nation in rushing this week (130.25 yards per game) and 14th in all-purpose yardage (156.25). Franklin ranks sixth on UCLA's all-purpose yardage list.
The senior has rushed for 1,042 yards this season and is the eighth Bruin back to have multiple 1,000-yard rushing seasons, joining DeShaun Foster-2001: 1,109/2000: 1,037; Skip Hicks 1997: 1,282/ 1996: 1,034; Karim Abdul-Jabbar 1995: 1,571/1994: 1,227; Gaston Green 1987: 1,098/ 1986: 1,405; Freeman McNeil 1980: 1,105/ 1979: 1,396; Theotis Brown 1978: 1,283/ 1976: 1,092; Wendell Tyler 1976: 1,003/ 1975: 1,388.
The winners of the 76th Maxwell Award will be announced as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show which will be broadcast on ESPN on December 6, 2012. Three finalists for the award will be announced on November 19, 2012 and a second round of voting will take place at that time. The formal presentation of these awards will be made at the Maxwell Football Club's Awards Gala which will be held on Friday, March 1, 2013 at the Harrah's Entertainment Complex in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Semifinalist voting for both of the collegiate awards presented by the Maxwell Football Club will begin on Tuesday, October 30th and close on Sunday November 18th.
