UCLA owns an 8-7 advantage in series games contested in the Rose Bowl. UCLA dropped a 50-0 decision at USC last year. Nelson Rosario caught seven passes in the contest for 118 yards to become UCLA's seventh 1,000-yard season receiver. It was Rosario's fourth 100-yard receiving game of the year and sixth of his career. The senior wideout also recorded his second career back-to-back 100-yard receiving games, after a 102-yard effort the previous week against Colorado. UCLA moved into the red zone three times during the contest and came away empty each time. Sheldon Price and Patrick Larimore topped Bruin tacklers with eight stops each.
The Trojans struck first in the 2010 game in the Rose Bowl, but the Bruins quickly tied the score at 7-7 after one quarter. USC went up 14-7 at the half after returning a Bruin fumble for a touchdown. Allen Bradford scored twice for the Trojans to extend the margin to 28-7. In the closing seconds of the contest, Richard Brehaut threw a scoring pass to Joseph Fauria to make the final score 28-14. UCLA got on the scoreboard first on a one-yard run by quarterback Patrick Cowan. A safety and a short run put the Trojans on top at the half by a 9-7 count. A pair of Justin Medlock field goals, one in the third and one in the fourth quarter (8:49 left), closed out the scoring. Bruin linebacker Eric McNeal tipped and then caught a Trojan pass attempt, giving UCLA possession with 1:10 to play in the game, helping put the home team in position to close out the win.
The winner of the UCLA-USC football game is awarded the Victory Bell. The 295-pound bell originally hung atop a Southern Pacific freight locomotive. It was given to the UCLA Alumni Association in 1939 and in 1941, it was taken by a group of USC students. A year later, the student body presidents of both schools signed an agreement that the winner of the football game would keep possession for the next year.
Jim Colletto, returns this week to his alma mater. After earning six varsity letters for UCLA in football and baseball, Colletto enjoyed a coaching career that spanned more than 40 years in college and the NFL. Just out of UCLA, he coached two seasons on the Bruins' offensive line, before serving at Brown, Xavier, Pacific and Cal State Fullerton, the latter stop as head coach. He returned to UCLA in 1980, stayed two seasons, and then worked as an offensive coordinator at Purdue, Arizona State and Ohio State before returning to Purdue as head coach for six seasons. After Purdue, he coached at Notre Dame, where, as offensive coordinator, the Fighting Irish generated more than 8,500 yards of total offense in two seasons. In 1999, he secured his first NFL appointment, moving on to Baltimore where he coached the Ravens offensive line for six years. In 2000, the Ravens broke the team rushing record and won Super Bowl XXXV, and in 2003, the Ravens captured the NFL rushing title, as running back Jamal Lewis ran for 2,066 yards. Colletto returned to UCLA a third time in 2006 to serve on Karl Dorrell's staff as assistant head coach and offensive line coach. That season, the Bruins defeated USC, 13-9, rushing for 121 yards. The veteran coach returned to the NFL, serving as Offensive Coordinator and O-line coach at Detroit before retiring after the 2008 season. For the past three years, Jim has served as a volunteer high school football coach at McQueen High in Reno.
