Bruins Finish Day 2 at Southern Highlands
March 9, 2013
The #2-ranked UCLA Men's Golf Team duplicated their first-round performance at the Southern Highlands Masters today, as an experienced group of Bruins replicated their team score of 291 (+3) in the tourneys second round to place fifth heading into the final day.
The team of five, featuring a solid core of upperclassmen, possesses a score of 582 (+6) through 36 holes, heading into the final round of play tomorrow. The Bruins score of three over was good enough for the fifth best score of the day, falling short of #5 New Mexico, who bested their first day effort by a single stroke to slide into fourth at 581 (+5). Other teams ahead of the Bruins include #6 Alabama, #12 Stanford, and #1 California, who posted an astounding 280 (-8) in the second day of play to take an eleven stroke lead heading into Sunday.
Anton Arboleda continued to lead the Bruins, joined by senior Pedro Figueiredo as the two shot 72 (E) each in their second 18. Senior Pontus Widegren followed close behind with a 73 (+1), a stroke ahead of freshman Jonathan Garrick at 74 (+2). Garrick in particular came on late, birdying two of his last three holes for a solid finish. Sophomore Manav Shah filled out the scorecard for UCLA, posting a 77 (+5).
The elder Bruin squad is back in action Sunday, as they move to finish strong among a loaded field. Tee times for the final day can be found here.
