Men's Golf Signs Pedro Figueiredo of Portugal
May 20, 2009
Pedro Figueiredo, one of the world's top junior amateur players from Portugal, has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend UCLA in the fall of 2009, Head Coach Derek Freeman announced this week.
Figueiredo, 17, boasts an outstanding junior record in Europe, and has played well in the United States. Currently, he ranks 111th in the world among amateurs and he is the top-ranked amateur in Portugal. Despite playing a limited U.S. schedule, he is ranked 30th by the American Junior Golf Assn.
"Pedro will be a great addition to our program," said Freeman. "He is a solid student and has intimated to me that education is important to him. On the golf course, his record speaks for itself. We are excited that he has chosen to play his college golf at UCLA."
In Europe, Figueiredo has established himself as a consistent winner, capturing the 2008 Portugese, Irish and British Open Amateur championships as well as advancing to the quarterfinals of the 2008 British Amateur. In 2007 he placed second in the Swiss Amateur and was a semifinalist in the Spanish Amateur.
He is a three-time Portuguese Player of the Year and three-time Portuguese Junior of the Year.
He also made the cut in two European Tour events in 2008: the Portuguese Open (T-71st) and the Madeira Islands Open (T-27th).
In the United States, Figueiredo placed third in the 2008 Jr. Players Championship with scores of 72-74-68--214 (-2) and third in the 2007 Jr. Orange Bowl with scores of 70-69--69-67--276 (-5).
