UCLA's Patrick Cantlay and Kevin Chappell continued to climb the leaderboard at the 112th U.S. Open at San Francisco's Olympic Club.

In Saturday's third round both players improved their scores for the second straight round at one of the world's most difficult courses.

Chappell fired a cool 68 (-2) on Saturday and was tied for eighth place at 213 (+3), just four shots off the lead. He played steady golf, making two birdies and 16 pars on a course where the average third round score was 74.0.

Cantlay posted a solid 71 (+1) and was tied for 47th at 219 (+9). His card had four birdies (at Nos. 7, 8, 10 and 18) and five bogeys.
