Christianson Takes 36-Hole Lead at State Amateur

Marshall, Heintz and Campbell are among the Top 20.

June 21, 2006

Four UCLA golfers were among the Top 20 individuals at the 95th California State Amateur Championship being played at Poppy Hills GC and Pebble Beach Golf Links this week.

UCLA junior Brandon Christianson was the 36-hole leader at five-under par 139 after posting rounds of 69-70. After the first round, Christianson trailed Brian Edick by three strokes, but the two Valencia residents switched positions after the second round.

"I'm playing great," said Christianson. ""With no bogeys (on Monday) and just one today (Tuesday), I kept it together and limited the mistakes."

Junior Matt Marshall was tied for eighth place at 144 (E) after posting rounds of 71-73. Seniors Chris Heintz and Peter Campbell were tied for 13th and 18th, respectively. Heintz posted rounds of 73-72 and Campbell carded rounds of 72-75.

Third round action continues on Wednesday at Pebble Beach Golf Links. The California State Amateur Championship is 54 holes of stroke play with the top 32 players advancing to match play beginning on Thursday.
