Christianson Wins Oxnard City Title

UCLA sophomore is the only player to finish under par.

July 18, 2005

UCLA sophomore Brandon Christianson won the Oxnard City Golf Championship at River Ridge Golf Course July 10 after posting a three-under par 69 in the final round.

Christianson was the only player in the tournament to post a 36-hole score under par. He carded rounds of 72-69--141 (-3) and won by seven shots. After struggling early, Christianson played a four-hole stretch from holes 8-11 in four-under par. The highlight was an eagle at the par 5 11th. For his second shot, he smashed a one-iron 235 yards from the sand over a greenside pond onto the putting surface. He drained the 20-foot putt.

"The eagle was huge," Christianson told the Ventura County Star. "After I made that putt, I knew I was in contention."

Christianson, who logged 29 rounds as a freshman last year, hit 16 greens in regulation and totaled 32 putts.

In other UCLA golf news, sophomore Matt Marshall of Los Gatos tied for 14th at the Northern California Golf Assn. Amateur Championship at Poppy Hills on July 17. Marshall posted rounds of 80-69-74--223.
