Men's Golf Begins 2012-13 Season in Georgia
Sept. 22, 2012
The fifth-ranked UCLA men's golf team will begin the 2012-13 season at the PING/GolfWeek Preview Invitational at the Capital City Club Crabapple Course in Alpharetta, GA. The 54-hole event will be played from Sept. 23-25.
The tournament features one of the strongest fields of the season, highlighted by No. 1 ranked Alabama, second-ranked Cal and No. 3 Texas. Overall, 15 of the Top 25 teams in the GolfWeek preseason poll will be competing. The Crabapple Course, which will host the 2013 NCAA Championship, will play to a par of 70 over 7,246 yards.
"We're looking forward to beginning our season," said Head Coach Derek Freeman, who begins his sixth year. "Playing in the Preview will allow us to gain experience on the 2013 national championship course."
Both Figueiredo and Arboleda enjoyed active summers. Arboleda advanced to the Round of 16 at the U.S. Amateur last month after tying for 17th place in stroke play. Figueiredo, a Second-Team All-American last season, advanced to the Round of 16 at the British Amateur and helped Portugal to a third place finish in the European Challenge Cup Trophy competition.
Among his summer highlights, Chan defeated Figueiredo in 20 holes in the first round of match play at the Western Amateur. Shah placed 10th at the SCGA Amateur. Pinizzotto earned a varsity letter as a freshman in 2012 by making six starts, playing 18 rounds and averaging 73.6.
"It is going to be exciting with all the new faces," Freeman continued. "Lorens Chan and Manav Shah will be playing for the Bruins for the first time (in Georgia). Both have great junior and amateur experience."
