Bruins Travel to Florida to Compete at Isleworth

Flores, Francis to lead a suddenly inexperienced team.

Oct. 25, 2008

The 13th ranked UCLA men's golf team travels to Windemere, FL for the Isleworth-UCF Collegiate Invitational, Oct. 26-28.

The 19-team field includes 14 teams ranked in the most recent GCAA coaches poll, including the nation's four top teams in Oklahoma State, USC, Georgia and Illinois. Third-ranked Georgia is the defending champion. In 2005, the Bruins tied for 11th at this event.

Competing for the Bruins will be senior All-American Erik Flores, sophomores Philip Francis and Connor Driscoll and freshmen Gregor Main and Alex Kim.

Flores, ranked 66th nationally, tied for 22nd in his first start this season at Olympia Fields. He ranks in a tie for second on the team with a 72.3 scoring average, but leads the Bruins in career percentage of subpar rounds at 37.6%.

Francis and Driscoll are averaging 75.6 and 76.0, respectively, after their first appearances this season.

Surprisingly, Main leads the Bruins in scoring average at 70.3 after finishing second at the Cal Poly Invitational earlier this month. Kim, who tied for eighth at the same event, is averaging 72.3, tied with Flores.

The Isleworth Golf and Country Club will play to a par of 72 over 7,544 yards. The teams will play 54 holes over three days (18 per day).

In other UCLA golf news, freshman Beau Schoolcraft will play in the Bill Cullem Invitational, hosted by Cal State Northridge, Oct. 26-28, at Wood Ranch CC in Simi Valley.

At the Cal Poly Invitational, Schoolcraft tied for 38th place.
