March 13, 2012
Los Angeles, Calif. - With the Major League Soccer season getting underway last Saturday, 20 former UCLA men's soccer players found themselves on the opening day rosters for 2012. UCLA continues to lead all schools in the country with a total of 61 all-time MLS players.
Eight of those 20 players started in their teams' season openers and played all 90 minutes this week - Marvell Wynne (Colorado Rapids), Chance Myers (Sporting Kansas City), Benny Feilhaber (New England Revolution), Kelyn Rowe (New England Revolution), Matt Reis (New England Revolution), Tony Beltran (Real Salt Lake), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake) and Kevin Hartman (FC Dallas). Saturday's match against the San Jose Earthquakes marked the MLS debut for Rowe after he played for two seasons at UCLA from 2010-2011. Rimando made three saves in Real Salt Lake's 3-1 victory over the LA Galaxy while Hartman made one save in FC Dallas' 2-1 win over the New York Red Bulls. A ninth player, Pete Vagenas, started for Chivas USA in their season opener and was subbed off after playing 59 minutes.
Three others came off the bench to make their 2012 MLS debuts - Jordan Harvey (Vancouver Whitecaps), Chad Barrett (Los Angeles Galaxy) and Michael Stephens (Los Angeles Galaxy). Harvey came on in the 64th minute as a substitute for Vancouver and played 26 minutes in their 2-0 season opening win over the Montreal Impact. Barrett was a sub in the 84th minute and played six minutes while Stephens played 20 minutes in the Galaxy's 3-1 loss to Real Salt Lake.
Seattle Sounders FC will begin their season on Saturday against Toronto FC and carries three former UCLA players on their roster in David Estrada, Patrick Ianni and Andy Rose. The Sounders are also coached by legendary former UCLA head coach Sigi Schmid, who played at UCLA and led the Bruins to three NCAA championships. Chris Henderson, who played for UCLA from 1989-1990 and competed for the U.S. at the 1990 World Cup, is currently the technical director for Seattle as well.
In addition, two former UCLA players are now with the Chivas USA coaching staff in Greg Vanney and Jimmy Conrad. Vanney is an assistant coach for Chivas USA while Conrad now works in the club's technical department after retiring last year.
UCLA also has five former players currently playing overseas in Carlos Bocanegra (Rangers FC/Scotland), Jonathan Bornstein (Tigres UANL/Mexico), Brad Friedel (Tottenham Hotspur/England), Brad Rusin (HB Koge/Denmark) and Matt Taylor SC Paderborn 07 (Germany). Finally, the Bruins have produced at least three players on every U.S. World Cup team since 1990 and at least one player on every U.S. Olympic team in the last seven Olympiads.
