11 Bruins Earn Pac-12 All-Academic Honors

Walnut Creek, Calif. - The UCLA men's soccer team landed an all-time best 11 players on the Pac-12 All-Academic Team, as announced by the conference today. Junior forward Chandler Hoffman and sophomore defender Joe Sofia were named to the first team while junior midfielders Ryan Hollingshead and Evan Raynr earned second team honors. Sophomore defender Patrick Matchett, senior midfielder Andy Rose, senior goalkeeper Brian Rowe, sophomore midfielder Kelyn Rowe, senior defender Shawn Singh, junior defender Matt Wiet and sophomore forward Reed Williams all earned honorable mention.
Hoffman, who holds a 3.74 GPA as Communication Studies major, currently leads the Pac-12 in goals (16) and points (36) and scored the game-winning goal against Delaware last night to help the Bruins advance to the NCAA Third Round. Chandler also was named to the All-Academic First-Team last year. Sofia currently has a 3.94 GPA and has played a key role in a UCLA defense that hasn't allowed a goal in its last six matches. Sofia also has one goal and one assist on the season.
Both Ryan Hollingshead and Evan Raynr were named to the second team for the second consecutive year as they had GPAs of 3.59 and 3.42 respectively as Psychology majors. Hollingshead has two goals and four assists on the year and assisted on Hoffman's game-winning goal on Sunday night. Raynr has recorded two assists in 20 games this season.
Rose, Brian Rowe and Singh earned honorable mention acclaim for the second consecutive year. Rose has two goals and three assists and has started every single game this season. Brian Rowe has a career-best 10 shutouts on the year and Shawn Singh has one goal and five assists in 21 games. Matchett, Kelyn Rowe, Wiet and Williams are all making their first appearance on the All-Academic Team. Matchett has five assists this season while Williams and Wiet have two assists and one assist respectively. Kelyn Rowe was recently named the 2011 Pac-12 Player of the Year and has five goals and eight assists on the season.
To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and be either a starter or significant contributor.
