Bruins Send Players In Two Directions: The UCLA men's tennis team kicks the 1998 spring season off by sending a contingent of players to two different tournaments. Three Bruins will travel to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to represent the Bruins in the Milwaukee Tennis Classic Jan. 6-10. Staying closer to home, four Bruins are scheduled to compete in the National Collegiate Tennis Classic being played at the Sherwood Country Club in Westlake, Calif. Jan. 9-11.
The Milwaukee Classic
The 23rd edition of the Milwaukee Tennis Classic features high level collegiate players from across the country in both a men's and women's bracket. Play begins on Tuesday and runs through Saturday at venues in the Milwaukee Metropolitan area.
Competing in Milwaukee are Brandon Kramer, Noah Newman and Chris Sands. All three will compete in the singles bracket while Kramer and Sands will also compete as a doubles team. All three of these Bruins are looking for a strong showing in hopes of securing a position in the UCLA dual-match lineup. Kramer posted a 5-3 recording fall singles action, including an impressive win over SMU's then No. 17-ranked Ignacio Hirigoyen, and went 3-3 in doubles with three different partners. Newman registered a 2-3 record in fall singles action, highlighted by reaching the round of 16 in the Rolex Regional, and paired with Sands for a 1-2 slate in doubles. Sands lost his only match in fall singles play at the So. Calif. Intercollegiate and saw his only doubles action with Newman.
The National Collegiate Tennis Classic
The NCTC is the first major collegiate invitational of the season and features both men's and women's competitors from eight teams as well as some of the top- ranked players from across the country. This year marks the 22nd anniversary of the NCTC which has been referred to as "the Wimbledon of College Tennis" by the press.
Action begins at 8:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday and at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday. The singles finals are slated to begin at 1:00 p.m. with Fox Sports providing television coverage of the event nationally and regionally. Representing UCLA in singles at the NCTC will be Vince Allegre, Matt Breen, Jason Cook and Alex Decret. Doubles teams will be formed Breen/Cook and Allegre/ Decret.
Allegre brought his game to a new level during the fall and improved to No. 4 in the national ITA rankings. He was runner-up at the All-American Championships, and the So. Calif. Intercollegiate (SCIC) and advanced to the round of 16 in the Rolex Regional while posting an 18-3 record. He will partner with Decret for the first time in doubles. Decret finished the fall 5-3 in singles and ranked No. 92.
Breen posted a 7-3 singles record during the fall and enters the spring ranked No. 54 in the nation. Cook enjoyed a solid fall, registering three upsets of ranked players en route to a 12-3 record and emerging at No. 70 in the rankings. He was runner-up at the Rolex Regional and reached the semifinals at the SCIC. This tandem went 1-1 in doubles during the fall and 9-3 in doubles action together last season.
