Sherwood tournament director Darren Miller and singles champion Haythem Abid

Thousand Oaks, Calif. - UCLA men's tennis player Haythem Abid claimed the singles title at the Sherwood Collegiate Cup on Monday, downing USC's Dejan Cvetkovic, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3.

Abid gives UCLA its sixth title at Sherwood in the last seven years. He follows Luben Pampoulov (2005), Tobias Clemens (2002-04) and Jean-Julien Rojer (2001).

In the all-Bruin doubles final on Monday, UCLA's Philipp Gruendler and Benjamin Kohlloeffel defeated Abid and Michael Look, 8-4.

UCLA opens up the 2007 dual match season this week, hosting UC Irvine on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. All home matches are at UCLA's Los Angeles Tennis Center.
