Men's Tennis Opens 1998 Season with Victory
Bruins defeat San Diego State, 5-2

LOS ANGELES - The UCLA men's tennis team opened the 1998 season with a 5-2
win over San Diego State University at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Courts today.
Today's match was moved to the Sunset Courts due to the resurfacing of the courts
at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
UCLA started things off right by claiming the doubles point with victories in the
No. 2 and 3 positions. The deciding doubles match saw UCLA's Vince Allegre and
Jean-Noel Grinda combine to defeat SDSU's Bobby Hrdina and Steve Adamson in the
No. 2 slot, 9-7.
San Diego State evened the score with a 6-3, 7-6 win at No. 2 singles by Faulk,
who defeated UCLA's Allegre. The Bruins claimed the next three singles matches as
Brandon Kramer started the roll with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 6 over Kolo
Green-Rosenthal. Alex Decret added a 6-4, 6-3 victory in the No. 5 slot over
Nguey Lay. Bruin newcomer, Grinda had the honors of clinching his first
collegiate team dual-match with a 6-4, 7-6 win in the top singles position over
Hrdina.
The final two matches went three sets each. UCLA's Jason Cook held on for a 6-3,
3-6, 6-1 win over Frank Morgan in the No. 4 position. SDSU's Alexander Waske
battled back to claim the No. 3 match 6-7, 7-6, 6-3 over UCLA's Matt Breen.
This was the first dual match of the 1998 season for both teams. The Bruins
return to action at 1:00 p.m., Wed., Jan. 21 at UC Irvine.
