No. 2 Men's Tennis Defeats No. 43 Arizona State, 6-1

UCLA sweeps all six singles mathces.

LOS ANGELES - The No. 2 ranked UCLA men's tennis team continued the opening weekend of Pac-10 Conference action with a 6-1 win over No. 43 ranked Arizona State University at the Los Angeles Tennis Center today. The match was originally scheduled to be played yesterday (Sat., Jan. 31), but was postponed due to rain.

UCLA won all six singles matches, but dropped the doubles point en route to the 6-1 victory. Three Bruins claimed straight set victories and a fourth won on an injury retirement in the first set. Receiving the early win was UCLA's Alex Decret on court No. 4 who led 5-4 in the first set at the time. The most decisive match of the day was on court No. 6 where Chris Sands won 6-0, 6-1 over Casey Was. On court No. 3, Matt Breen posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Ed Carter, while in the top-slot, Jean-Noel Grinda kept his match to two sets as he claimed a 6-3, 7-5 win over Gustavo Marcaccio. In the three-set matches played on courts two and five, respectively, Vince Allegre held on to claim a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win over Alex Osterrieth at No. 2, while Brandon Kramer battled back for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over Tim Hammond at No. 5.

Arizona State claiming the doubles point with victories on court Nos. 1 and 2. UCLA's duo of Allegre and Sands notched an 8-1 win over ASU's tandem of Was and Miles Rogers on court No. 3 to start doubles action. ASU's team of Carter and Hammond registered an 8-4 win over UCLA's team of Breen and Grinda at No. 1. The decisive doubles match saw ASU's Marcaccio and Osterrieth post an 8-6 win over UCLA's Kramer and Noah Newman in the No. 2 slot.

UCLA improves to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in Pac-10 action with today's victory. ASU fell to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in Pac-10 play. The Bruins' homestand continues Tuesday, Feb. 3, as local rival and No. 12 ranked Pepperdine comes to LATC for a 1:30 p.m. match.
