UCLA Notches 7-0 Shutout over SDSU

LOS ANGELES - Playing its only competition of the week, the eighth-ranked UCLA men's tennis team registered a 7-0 victory over San Diego State on Thursday afternoon at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. With the win, the Bruins improve to 7-0 on the season while the Aztecs fall to 3-1 after suffering their first loss of the year.
UCLA jumped out to an early lead in Thursday's contest by taking two of three doubles matches to claim the point. After Warren Hardie and Clay Thompson notched an 8-4 win at court No. 3, the Bruins claimed the point at court No. 1, where Nick Meister and Adrien Puget were 8-3 winners over SDSU's Hunter Nicholas and Javier Pulgar.
Bruin freshman Dennis Mkrtchian provided UCLA with its first singles point on the day, improving to 6-0 in dual matches this season with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Andranik Khachatryan at court No. 6. That win was closely followed by a 6-1, 6-3 victory by Meister over Pulgar at court No. 1. Thompson clinched the win for UCLA at the No. 2 position, downing Derek Siddiqui, 6-4, 6-3 to give the Bruins a 4-0 lead.
Junior Maxime Tabatruong was the fourth straight-set winner for UCLA on the day, downing Nicholas, 6-4, 6-4 at court No. 5. Both Marcos Giron and Puget won in three sets. Giron saved a match point down 8-9 in a 10-point tiebreaker against Thorsten Bertsch at court No. 3, eventually winning 2-6, 6-4, (11-9).
UCLA continues non-conference play next week, hosting No. 12 Pepperdine on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m.
