LOS ANGELES, CA -- The No. 2 ranked UCLA men's tennis team defeated No. 37 ranked Fresno State, 5-2, today at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. With the victory UCLA improved to 8-3 on the season, while Fresno fell to 2-3.
UCLA started the day right by claiming the doubles point with wins on all three courts. The Bruins then claimed the first singles match completed as Chris Sands posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Kevin Viera in the No. 5 position. Fresno followed quickly with a 6-4, 6-2 win for Andy Scorteanu over UCLA's Vince Allegre in the No. 2 position. UCLA answered with a solid 6-1, 6-4 win by Matt Breen over P.J. Dormire in the No. 3 slot, giving the Bruins a 3-1 lead at the time.
The match that clinched the team victory pitted UCLA's Jean-Noel Grinda against FSU's Peter Luczak on court No. 1. Grinda showed why he is currently ranked No. 12 in the nation as he posted a 7-5, 6-3 victory for UCLA fourth team point of the day.
The final two singles matches went three sets each. UCLA freshman Noah Newman claimed the first set 6-3, then fell 4-6 in the second before blanking FSU's Rob Cheyne 6-0 in the third. In the closest match of the day, FSU's Olivier Le Jeune held off UCLA's Alex Decret, (6-4, 3-6, 6-2) to claim the Bulldogs final point of the day.
UCLA's homestand continues on Wednesday, Mar. 4 as the Bruins host cross-town rival No. 10 USC in a 1:30 p.m. match at the Los Angles Tennis Center. Admission to all of UCLA's home tennis matches is free.
