Men's Tennis Wins, 5-2, over Wisconsin

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The UCLA men's tennis team, listed No. 10 in the ITA national rankings released yesterday, registered a 5-2 non-conference win over the University of Wisconsin today at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. With the victory UCLA improved to 10-3 overall, while Wisconsin slipped to 4-3.

In singles play, UCLA won position Nos. 1 through 4, while Wisconsin claimed Nos. 5 and 6. The Bruins cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 victory on court No. 1 as Jean-Noel Grinda defeated Mark Loughrin. Court No. 4 finished almost as quickly as Alex Decret defeated Jeff Malik 6-4, 6-1. Wisconsin claimed its first point, when Stefan Reist defeated Chris Sands 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 5 slot. After going 7-5 in the first set, UCLA's Vince Allegre rallied for a 6-0 score in the second to defeat John Thomsen on court No. 3.

The teams split the longer matches of the day. On court No. 2, UCLA's Matt Breen claimed a 7-6, 6-2 win over David Chang. The final match went the distance on court No. 6 with Wisconsin's Adam Schumacher holding on for a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 win over Noah Newman.

The match got underway with UCLA winning the first doubles match, 8-3, as Breen and Grinda defeated Chang and Loughrin on court No. 1. Wisconsin answered with an 8-4 win on court No. 3 as Reist and Schumacher defeated UCLA's Allegre and Sands. UCLA then claimed the doubles point as Decret and Newman rallied for an 8-6 victory over Malik and Thomsen on court No. 2.

The Bruins return to Pac-10 Conference action and play their next six matches on the road, starting at Arizona State this Friday, March 13 and at the University of Arizona on Saturday, the 14th. Wisconsin, which defeated UC Irvine yesterday, returns from its spring break trip to play at Big-10 rival Illinois on Sunday.
