LOS ANGELES - In the second semifinal match of the NCAA Men's Tennis Region VIII Championships at UCLA's Los Angeles Tennis Center today, No. 10 ranked UCLA defeated No. 30 ASU 4-0. ). With the victory, UCLA improves to 15-7 overall and advances to the Regional Final where it will meet Washington in a 1:00 p.m. match tomorrow (May 17). Sunday's meeting will be a rematch of the April 10 match won by Washington 5-2 in Seattle, giving the Huskies their first ever win over UCLA. ASU finishes the season with an 11-11 overall record.

In doubles action, UCLA claimed the point with victories on court Nos. 1 and 3. In the first match completed, UCLA's Matt Breen/ Jean-Noel Grinda knocked off ASU's Ed Carter/Tim Hammond 8-2 in the No. 1 slot. The Bruins took the doubles point when the No. 3 team of Jason Cook/Noah Newman defeated Casey Was/Peter Dani.

Up 1-0 heading into singles action, UCLA remained strong, taking victories on courts Nos. 4, 5 and 6. The first match to finish was on court No. 4 as UCLA's Cook ousted ASU's Dani 6-3, 6-1. The Bruins took a 3-0 lead when Brandon Kramer knocked off Was 6-3, 6-3 on court No. 6. UCLA's Alex Decret sealed the victory for UCLA when he recorded a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Hammond on court No. 5.

The match was closer than the score indicats as Arizona State had just forced a third set on court No. 1 and was up a set on court No. 3 when UCLA clinched the victory. The match on court No. 2 was also extremely close with UCLA's Vince Allegre claiming the first set 7-6 (3) before play was halted.
