Men's Tennis Falls to No. 1 Stanford

May 24, 1998

ATHENS, Ga. - Coming off a 4-2 first-round win over the University of Texas on Saturday, the UCLA men's tennis team fell to No. 1 seeded Stanford 5-0, in a quarterfinal match Sunday at the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships held at the University of Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex. Stanford, winner of 37-straight matches dating back to last season, jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after taking the doubles point with victories on court Nos. 1 and 2. UCLA's No. 2 duo of Alex Decret / Brandon Kramer was leading 5-1 over Stanford's Paul Goldstein / Ryan Wolters, however ended up falling 8-5.

In singles action, Stanford moved out to a 2-0 lead when Wolters defeated UCLA's Jason Cook on court No. 4, 6-3, 6-3. Next off was court No. 5, where Stanford's Geoff Abrams registered a 6-2, 7-6(3) victory over Bruin Alex Decret. Despite a 3-0 Cardinal advantage, the match was still close as matches on court Nos. 1, 2 and 6 were still far from being decided. UCLA's Jean-Noel Grinda won the first set 7-5 from Goldstein on court No. 1. On court No. 6, UCLA's Brandon Kramer, after dropping the first set 3-6, battled back to take the second set 6-3. UCLA's No. 3 player Matt Breen, after being up 5-2 in the first set against Bob Bryan, dropped the set 5-7. The dual match was eventually clinched on that very same court as Bryan took the second set 6-4 to seal the 5-0 team victory. Traditionally, the first team to four points wins the dual match, however Mike Bryan defeated UCLA's Vince Allegre 7-5, 6-2 on court No. 2, at the same time court No. 3 finished.

UCLA ends the 1998 season 17-8 overall, while Stanford advances to the semifinals to face Mississippi State tomorrow.

The Bruins still have three singles players and one doubles team in the individual portion of the championships, which begin on Wednesday. Jean-Noel Grinda, Vince Allegre and Matt Breen will be competing in singles, while the team of Grinda and Breen have qualified for the doubles draw.
